The History of the LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® Method

The LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® Method was first launched at the end of 2001. The idea to use LEGO bricks for business purposes saw its first light in 1995. From 1995 – 1999 Bart Victor, Johan Roos and the owner of the LEGO COMPANY, Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen, experimented with the idea. In 1999 Robert Rasmussen accepts a request to take charge of the development, which resulted in the completion of version 1.0 of the LSP Method in 2001, driven and managed by Robert Rasmussen. In 2002 version 1.0 was ready for launch by Executive Discovery LLC.

The LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® Method is a facilitated thinking, communication, and problem-solving technique that transforms traditional “lean backward meetings” (where 20% of participants use 80% of the speaking time) into dynamic “lean forward meetings” where 100% of participants contribute 100% of their insights, knowledge, and commitment.

By engaging participants in building three-dimensional LEGO models in response to challenges, the method creates a universal language that enables everyone to contribute their insights regardless of position, education, or culture.

Frequently
Asked Questions

Everything you need to know

still curious? Let’s talk!

What is LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY®?

LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® is a facilitated methodology that uses LEGO bricks to help people express ideas, reflect deeply, and solve problems together through hands-on building and storytelling.

What can LSP® be used for?

LSP® is used for team development, strategy building, organizational alignment, innovation, problem-solving, and even leadership development — all through playful yet purposeful conversations.

Why do we need LEGO bricks? Can’t we just use paper or a discussion board?

LEGO bricks activate both the logical and creative parts of the brain. They help people express ideas they may not put into words and ensure everyone contributes equally — not just the loudest voices in the room.

Is LSP® only for executives, or can it be used with general staff?

LSP® is for everyone — from frontline staff to top executives. It creates a safe and engaging space for all voices to be heard and helps teams connect and co-create across all levels.

Can small organizations use LSP®, or is it only for large companies?

LSP® works for any size organization. It’s not about how big your company is — it’s about the willingness to think together and move forward as a team.

Is LSP® suitable for Thai organizations, where people may be shy to speak up?

Absolutely. LSP® helps participants express ideas through models before they speak, making it easier for quiet or reserved individuals to share. It’s especially effective in cultures where direct expression can be challenging.
